Hello everyone! I have the honor of hosting a giveaway with the amazing Haley from Passing the Pages and I am stoked. Equally, I am stoked about the subject. Welcome to the Beauties and the Beasts Giveaways, where we pick both the female heroines and their mysterious male counterparts out of our favorite young adult fiction, showcase why we love them, and then we give away some of their awesome!

The Beauties of two of YA's most addictive series are some of my favorite heroines. I'm talking about Miss Clary, from Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instrument series, and Nora from Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush, Hush series. I love both of these characters because it's hard to find that heroine with enough spunk to survive the plots they're thrown into.
Clary
Clary is a favorite character of mine by far. For those of you unfamiliar to the series, she goes from thinking she understands everything the world has to offer, to being absolutely clueless after the disappearance of her mother. She becomes one of the strongest characters of the series, however, when she decides she won't let her mother go without a fight and embarks on an adventure that has attracted thousands of fans.
Suddenly the normal Clary who's used to hanging out with her lanky bespectacled best friend Simon becomes a girl whose life is strewn with fantastic creatures and hoards of characters that existed just beyond her reality for her entire life. Fashionable warlocks, motorcycle riding vampires, book store owning werewolves, and of course the upper class Shadowhunters who get their kicks from slaughtering the local demon population.
Clary has been spot on during the entire series and she's a true testament to the female main character who takes control and totally owns it. Her series is probably one of the best I've ever read.
Nora
And another series that has had me talking features Nora, a high school student who falls for one of the fallen...
When I first began reading Hush, Hush, before I'd even gotten into the plot, I loved Nora. She reminded me of... me. She was headstrong with nothing particularly spectacular about her, but somehow she stepped up to the plate when the situation called for it. It all starts when Nora meets the new boy at school, Patch. He's very cocky and very in her face, which makes her skin crawl. With her friend Vee as her backup she tries to survive the plot, which is twisted around a mystery, fallen angel lore, and secrets that kept me on the edge of my seat.
Nora was rather kick-ass. I've read a lot of YA fiction where the heroine has me biting my tongue just to stomach them. I want to read about a character who let's the best inside of them come out at all the right moments. She kicked you know what and made me cheer, but when she was only human and showed her weakness I liked her even more. She never pretended to be more than she was.
Both of these characters are just so much fun to read. They have this strength in them that really makes their books worth reading. If they weren't who they were and how they were, I don't think I would have liked either series half as much. It boils down to good writing and kick-ass beauties.
